I did it. And I’m going to tell you how.
I’m going to be honest. I can’t show you how to make millions of dollars making iPhone apps. As fun as that would be to say, I can’t say it. Why? Simple. Because I haven’t done it myself personally. What I can show you is this, how to make $100,000 to $500,000 with iPhone apps. Not millions, but a couple hundred thousand dollars. Let me tell you how.
Here is the first thing I learned making this money. It’s something that surprised me. I learned, making an extra $50,000 or $100,000, can totally change your life. I felt it. Sometimes a couple hundred grand can change everything. Literally everything. Especially, if how you make it is on the internet. Internet money is different. You’ll see. Or maybe you know a bit about it already. But making money on the internet from strangers = time freedom. Having the flexibility to leave your job for a bit, be less stressed about a job you might get fired from, or to just make extra money to invest, changes your mood and outlook completely.
That money helped me a lot.
It really helped me when I lost my main source of income back in 2023. Without it, I would have been way more stressed. I had an 8 month old baby, and it was a hard year. But in that moment, I had side income from my apps that paid my bills. I’m going to show you how I did it.
But first, I want you to know something about me. I can’t code. I did a tiny amount a few years ago. But it was too hard for me. But there is good news. You don’t need to code. I just hired developers. They love coding. Which is a funny reminder, that there are people that * love * doing what you hate. I’ll show you how. Its easier than you think.
Let’s talk about apps, in 2024.
I want you to know something. Right now, there are mobile apps, simple apps, making a ton of money. Apps that did not exist 1 year ago doing $20,000, $50,000, $100,000 per month most of them have 90% profit margins. And most don’t need much maintenance once finished.
Subscription apps are still growing like crazy. The world is now on a subscription model. There are 1 Billion credit card connected iPhones all over the world. They all download and pay for apps. It’s simple as that. It’s even bigger than you think.
When making a subscription app, your first task is to find a keyword that can get you enough organic downloads to quickly get to $500/month within 2-3 months. If you can do that, you are on track for growing it to $2,500-$4,500/month in the following 2-6 months. Once you do that, your app will be worth 2-3X annual sales. And someone will gladly give you a $100,000 check for that app. That’s the going rate. From zero to $500/month, to a couple thousand a month, then a $100,000 check. Or you could keep growing it. But you’ll have that option. I’d suggest making several apps.
Step 1: Pick your app name, using keyword research to find high search traffic keywords that others are not using. *Tip, when naming your app, never repeat words in the title, subtitle, or keywords. It will hurt your app rankings. This is very important.
Step 2: Validate your idea by checking downloads and revenue for existing apps in your search results using sensortower.com. Making sure there are apps already getting good downloads
Step 3: What is your 1 key result to deliver? For example: I have a vision board app, called Why. So for me make a Vision Board is first app use is my main key result.
Step 4: In the first time user experience you need a great onboarding that pushes them straight to the key result. Also, ask for reviews in onboarding and after their first key result or key action in the app. Whatever the main action is.
Step 5: Design. Find simple 2 tab or no tab apps and copy their main screens as a base. Draw on paper. Then use the simplest tool like Balsamiq to make the 3-4 main screens of the version 1 of the app. Now, you’re going to go to dribbble.com and find a designer you like. There are many many designers who can make a version 1 of your app 3-7 screens for $500-$2,000
Step 6: * You *are the designer of the app. Meaning it’s your job to draw every screen and think about what it should look like. Then you’re going to make an ugly design in Balsamiq and share it with the designer. You will also, find design examples you like. and share with your designer.
Step 7: Design to Code. Once design is done, you’re going to find a developer. Developers will turn your designs into code. And you’ll get testflight test builds from them
Step 8: There are many ways to find a developer. It can cost zero if they’re a friend. But most version 1 apps should run you a couple thousand dollars to $10,000. I’d shoot around $5K-$7K for Version 1.
